Engage in local culture beyond DIS

Whether you’re in Stockholm or Copenhagen for a semester or summer session, you’ll find plenty of opportunities outside DIS to dig into the local culture. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of your time abroad.

Volunteer with a local organization

From food kitchens and cafes to galleries and local high schools, there are many local places where you can lend a helping hand and build your résumé. Go to DIS Navigate to see our list of recommended organizations.

Join local clubs and teams

Many past DIS students have used their time abroad to dig into their favorite hobbies, like teams for rowing, running, soccer, dancing, swimming, and more.

Explore local festivals and events

Both Stockholm and Copenhagen are bursting with cultural events all year round. From documentary and music festivals to culture nights, don’t miss the cultural gems in your city.

Unique semester involvement opportunities

New in Town Meetups

From board game nights to bonfires and community dinners, New in Town Meetups take place during the first weeks of the semester, providing an opportunity to experience the city with other DIS students and socialize.

Seminar Nights and panels

Sign up for the Visting Host Program

The most effective way to get to know and understand a country, meeting locals is an integral part of the study abroad experience. While many students meet locals in their housing and day-to-day life, our Visiting Host program creates meaningful opportunities for you to interact with Swedes and Danes.

Our Visiting Host program is designed to help you engage in Scandinavian culture on a deeper level. Visiting Hosts are local volunteers in Sweden and Denmark who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, want to share their culture, and are excited to learn about yours. If you are paired with a Visiting Host, you will make plans together to meet one to four times a month (depending on your host’s availability) for activities, meals, and more.

Past DIS students in the Visiting Host program formed deeper connections to Scandinavia that lasted long beyond their semester abroad.
